Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
