Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
