Agencies in Tasmania are striving to determine a magenta ooze that has surfaced on a remote shoreline, with certain experts concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Extensive Occurrence On Coastline

The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a portion of a southern bay about 37 miles south of the city. A like substance has also been recorded on sections of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.

Samples Collected for Analysis

Specimens have been taken and sent to the regulatory body for testing. A representative commented that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in reaction to shifts in minerals, temperature, rainfall or light".

"These blooms are at times called reddish tides because the proliferations can change the water red," the spokesperson said. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with numerous types functioning as a key source of energy for creatures in the oceanic food chain."

"The primary reason of crimson tides in these seas is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."

Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their rate has risen in the past few years, partially due to climate change and pollution that combine to create food-loaded oceans primed for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that normally act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a bloom, there is a rapid growth in their colonies that disrupts the healthy balance of marine environments.

These phenomena have been likened to subsurface wildfires and can continue to grow as long as the environment is suitable. In severe cases, delicate ocean habitats can be devastated as sea creatures is destroyed or suffocated, providing more food for the bloom.

Previous Catastrophic Bloom in a neighboring state

South Australia in the past dealt with a catastrophic algae outbreak along its southern coastline after a series of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across a vast area. The event left swimmers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to 250,000 marine animals across numerous types, according to agency assessments.

Specialist Analysis on the Current Event

An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the beginning of that event commented, based on images of the Tasmanian outbreak, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".

"We have seen many of these blooms around Tassie of late," she remarked.

The expert stated sea sparkle did not produce poisons similar to the organism involved in the previous severe algal bloom, but it does consume small invertebrates and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.
